Malmö International School (MIS)

Malmo International School (MIS) is where we will be clinical teaching for the next few weeks. According to the MIS website, The Primary Years Program (PYP 1-6) is authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization and is officially an IB World School for students aged 6-12. I have been placed in a PYP 4 classroom, which is the equivalent of a 3rd-4th grade classroom in the states. The students range from 9-10years old. The classroom has about 19 students with the students ranging in ethnicity, cultures, and languages. However, the majority of the students speak English and their native language.

The class schedule differs from the routined schedule I am used to at Tanglewood. The schedule for each day changes. The students have specials such as Music, Drama, Art, P.E., Swedish, and Mindfulness which are rotated throughout the week as well as core subjects like Math and Language Arts.

The students always have two recess breaks at 10am and 12pm (right after lunch). The major topic of focus the last week I have observed is their Inquiry Project where they are learning about the development of cities, infrastructure of cities, and comparing/ contrasting various cities with Scandinavian counties. At the end of the Unit, the student's summative project is building their own cities in a shoe box and including a list of important elements of a city.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness was a new concept I had not heard before as a special for the students. I joined in on one of the 30 minute classes and observed what exactly the students did in the class. The whole idea behind the class is to relax the students and have them become more in tune with their thoughts, body, and mind. Corina, their instructor, had the students playing with slime with kneading it back in forth and squishing it with their hands while listening to soothing music and the lights dimmed. Corina said other activities are yoga, dance, games using their bodies, or meditation. I think this class is a great opportunity for the students to refocus themselves and take time out of the day to just relax and not be stressed.
